The idea for this project came from a horrific event that shocked our community. A car accident during the August of 2018 lead to the deaths of 3 Queen Anne boys who were loved by many throughout Seattle. None of the boys were wearing their seat belts.
I will work to ensure that people are educated about seat belt use.
Data
After researching the topic I found some shocking statistics from the CDC:
- Unintentional deaths account for 48% of deaths in teens, almost trumping homicide, suicide, heart disease and cancer combined.
- 73% of all unintentional deaths and injuries come from motor vehicle accident (see pie graph below)
- Not wearing a seat belt increases the risk of being ejected from a car in an accident. Three out of four people ejected from cars in accidents die from their injuries.
- The odds of dying in a serious car wreck while not wearing a seat belt are 1 in 2.
Plan
The purpose of an Eagle Scout project is to develop a project that benefits my community and demonstrate leadership. My project focuses on teaching as many people as possible about seat belt safety.
My Eagle Scout project includes:
- Oral presentations about seat belt safety, given by scouts in our troop to local middle school and high school students. Each student who attends the presentations is presented with materials for Seat Bells to install in their car.
- An online social media campaign to promote safe seat belt habits
